Who is at phone number 10000123456?

Today, while walking my dog, my telephone started to ring - but I hesitated answering, because I didn't recognize the weird phone number:

10000123456
Do you want to know who is at the strange phone number of 10000123456?

Well, it turns out that this is a generic phone number that is used when people are calling you via Skype?  But how can you find out exactly who is on the other end?

All I know is that Skype is pretty awesome when using a great Smartphone.   Check it out: Using a Smartphone to make Skype calls can feel like you're using a real phone, but is actually using Skype.

So remember, if you see the number 1-000-012-3456 or "1 000 012 3456" or similar, you might want to answer - it could be very important, and not a random sales pitch!

Mid-afternoon last Wednesday,I began receiving calls from Private Caller. The female caller advised that I had won $10,000 in grant money. More was said, however the caller had a heavy foreign accent so I only understood less than half of what she was saying. I did understand her to say that I had to send $199. to the money. I told her I didn't have $199. and hung up.

A couple of minutes later a male called -- this time the ID was 000-012-3456. The caller stated the same thing that I had won a $10,000 grant. I told him my bank balance was less than zero at which point he asked me if I had a vehicle I could sell. I told him he was out of his mind and hung up. A few minutes later, he called back and in a hushed voice asked me for $100. He once again asked me if I had something to sell -- again I hung up. This went on a few more times and each time I hung up.

The calls stopped till about 9:45 this morning at which time I got very ugly with the caller.

Who are these people? They are very insistent and insolent. The calls are untraceable.

I got phone call from 10000123456 yesterday at my cell phone. It was sales call for long distance plan. I requested called to remove my name from their call list & don't call me for any sales or promotion. I got surprised when the called started to talk rudely so I disconencted the phone. It's my advise never pick up phone from weired no and even if it's your know let them to leave messge for you and then you can call them back. Don't let your known to play with your happy mood only b'coz they want to save their few cwnts.

My father got a call from this number and the caller said he was his Grandson, and even used the correct name of my Dad's grandson. He said he was in Europe on a vacation he'd won, but had gotten into some trouble and was arrested and needed $2800 in bail money. "Please let's keep this just between us Grandpa" he says. My Dad found the whole thing unsettling and a bit hinky, especially since he'd just spoken with my brother a few minutes earlier and nothing was said about a European Vacation.
We checked with the phone company and found that this was an often-used scam coming out of Jamaica and Canada.
Heads-up people.....SCAM

I just received a call from this number saying I was receiving a delivery from the Stag Shop on Fri. This order was apparently placed about 5 weeks ago. It was going to cost me about $104. The caller couldn't tell me who placed the order, where it was going to be delivered or what phone number he had called. My husband got on the phone and was very irate with him and eventually hung up on the guy.

My 90 year old father received a call from this number asking for bail money for his grandson who reportedly was in Greece and got in a car accident where the police then discovered cocaine in the car. (Grandson was sleeping in his bed at the time at home in NY). Unsettling because the first voice sounded official, the second voice sounded like the grandson, and the actual names of my father and the grandson were used. This scam seems to circulate yearly and targets senior citizens--specifically grandparents. The only connection of these two family members which could have been found was through the DMV where one bought the car of another. Report all calls from this number to the Attorney general, your state senator, the local police, any business or organization which may have had their database tapped for your family connections--including AARP and your banks.
Note: anytime you are asked to wire money it is a scam-----if relatives are traveling out of the country, set an oral password between you as a security measure in case they ever need assistance (i.e. passport, birth certificate, license or money) also you can set up a paypal account which is accessible at any bank's customer service computer

I received a call from 000012345 (2)

Weird number I thought and didn't attend. Then it rang a second time so I answered and it seemed to connect me to another line which was ringing so I hung up, thinking it was a marketing scam. Sometimes crooked telemarketing companies overseas will automatically connect you using this system to a 900 number, and you will be billed $25 per minute without knowing. There will be someone at the other end who will try to prolong you conversation and if they even manage to keep you for a few minutes, they've made lots of money. If it's anyone important or a friend, they will get in touch with you eventually. Don't answer something you're not sure of.

What seems strange is that no one seems to be able to stop this; why?

I just got a call from this number but didn't answer. I checked the number on line to see who it might be and saw the post re: Skype. My daughter is away so I checked and she was on Skype. We connected and it had been her trying to call from Skype. It had been her calling my cell from her computer via Skype.

My strategy is to quickly check my skype when I receive a call from this number(caller will see your name pop up on their contacts list). That way I save the caller money and reduce the risk of being scammed.
