My Porsche's remote key was getting weaker and weaker, until one day it stopped operating altogether. Keyless remote without the remoteness. Not so good.
I was a bit fearful spending a sizable chunk of my time at the dealership to have such a small problem addressed, and so I decided that I would try to replace the battery myself.
The following video guide shows you how to successfully open up the key and replace the alarm remote battery.
Items required:
- A clear work surface
- A small blade-type screw driver
- A quality CR-2032 Battery

I was having similar issues with my 996 keys, found your post, opened the key, removed the battery, dusted around, and problem solved!
the remote control now works.
I've encountered one issue with closing back the key, as the two pieces doesnt seems to hold together very well, there is a constant gap between them.
was wondering if there is something i'm doing wrong, or if there is a specific order to which you should place the two places.
996man, i also had this problem with my key at first.
I think that the PCB assembly with battery should be put into the top half (with the rubber buttons) first, then that piece is snapped onto the bottom half of the key with that contains the actual metal "key" part and the little RFID glass bubble device.

Thanks for the tip with putting the electronics into the part of the shell with the buttons. I tried it the other way around and wasn't able to close the housing. Drove me nuts :)
Unfortunately, my remote seems to be hosed. The new battery didn't help. The remote does not work anymore, have to use the key the old fashioned way. Any ideas what might be wrong? My first remote stopped working maybe after 5 years, the second one now after 8. The light on the remote is blinking, and the car is not in "power saving" mode.

Great tip for reassembling the key! It saved me an embarrassing trip to the dealer just to close the key halves.

i also have a 996 and tried the above my key still doesn't work ,the light flashes but the car doesn't open! if i use the key the alarm goes off. is the key screwed or do i need a dealer to re calibrate the alarm? any help gratefully recieved,

great video, but a caveat. There is a very small spring that is wedged between the little black button you pushed on to open the remote. It's under pressure and wants to spring out and it's tiny, and now lost. It holds the key into the remote body. I had to cut a small section from the ink tube of a ball point pen to wedge in to keep the key in place. works fine and probably a better solution than a spring anyway.

OMG! It finally worked. My problem with closing the key was the chip and battery weren't seated in the top of the key completely. I could see that it was slightly crooked as it sat in the top half of the key. I had to make sure the chip seated tightly with the two black prongs. It took awhile, but perserverance prevailed. You should not be able to turn the key upside down and have the chip and battery fall out. If that happens, its not seated properly. Thanks again! Saved me $250 for a new key!
I finally got it to close..thanks to all the positive comments posted that kept me going. My problem was the chip and the battery weren't tightly seated within the top half of the key. It looked like it was, but was off just a bit. If you can turn the key over and the chip and battery fall out, it's not seated properly. Be sure to seat it between the two tiny black prongs. You'll hear a snap! Then you can close the key as suggested! Saved me $250! Thanks!

My light was flashing but the fob would not disarm the alarm.
After the key was in the ignition it would work that day but not the next.
I thought the CR2032 battery was rechargable but this says they are not:

I saw this helpful video *after* I spent a long time carefully taking the key apart. Thanks for sharing the pain! I think key fobs are the most un-user-friendly devices ever made by man. Not to mention those non-helpful manuals - in my 996 manual, the key chapter did not talk about battery replacement. Battery replacement for your key is covered - get this - separately, buried in the back, under a chapter about Battery (as in car battery). If you replaced your key battery and it still doesn't work, don't go to dealer YET - stick it in the ignition, turn car on and off, wiggle wheel around - in my Audi this step helps (and was buried in the manual). Not sure about Porsche. Audi dealer refused to tell me this tip on phone and wanted me to take it in for hundreds of dollars. Don't get suckered into letting them exploit your innocence!

Is it possible for someone to send me a side profile of the screw marked 'screw 2' in the first picture? I had lost this one and ordered a replacement set of screws from eBay but none of them seem to fit and there is no hole to screw it in as the bit it touches is a copper circle.
